Diwali, where visitors can immerse themselves in Indian culture as they eat, drink and walk around, will be held in Yokohama again.

As an economic base after the opening of its port, and as a sister city, Yokohama has long held links with India and has continued to foster friendly ties

“Diwali in Yokohama”, has become known as an event that is unique to Yokohama.

Diwali is a Hindu  festival that celebrates the Indian New Year, which falls between the end of October and the beginning of November. Prayers for good luck in the coming year are also offered during this period. The festival is also known as the Festival of Lights and is like a cross between Japan’s Tori-no-Ichi Fair and the Japanese New Year. Merchants in particular open fresh accounts for the new year and offer prayers for prosperity. Out of the many festivals in India, it is one of the largest, and is very similar to the Japanese New Year, in that families gather together for the festivities.

At “Diwali in Yokohama”, visitors will be able to enjoy Indian food, wine and beers etc, as well as distinctive Indian sundries and fashion. Visitors will also be able to try Yoga and Ayurveda, and there will be stage performances of Indian traditional dance and Bollywood dance too.

Please visit and enjoy the Indian atmosphere through each of the five senses.

The finale, “World of Light / Illumination”, in which visitors can enjoy a dreamy candlelit atmosphere will be the climax of Diwali, Festival of Lights.
